Domestic Service Professionals – Pride and Glory of the Philippines

Today, a Filipina Domestic Service Professional took the world’s attention after her rags-to-riches story was featured on Straits Times Singapore, Yahoo! and AFP, to name a few.  The fortunate Filipina Domestic Service Professional, known as Christine, inherited more than US$ 4 Million and a luxurious apartment near Singapore’s famous shopping haven, Orchard Road, from her late employer who passed away a year ago.

Christine, was a Domestic Service Professional to a Singaporean Physician, the late Dr. Quek Kai Miew, for over 20 years. Just like all the other Filipino Domestic Service Professionals, she provided top quality household service to the good doctor and her family.  A top quality household service that made her more than deserving enough to be called a Domestic Service Professional.

Domestic Service Professional, commonly known to many as Domestic Helper or Maid, is a new name tagged to a career which has greatly contributed not just to the personal lives of the individuals rendering such services, but also to the economy of  the Philippines, especially when they are destined to work abroad. The main responsibility of a Domestic Service Professional is to provide household work. This includes, but not limited to  (I must say) house cleaning services, laundry services, childcare & adult care services, cooking services and even gardening services.

Though being a Domestic Service Professional doesn’t require a four-year bachelor’s degree course, their line of work requires special skills which only can be developed after years of experience and specialization while on the job.  Aside from that, it also requires an emotional and psychological skill to be able to overcome the distance from being far away from home or getting homesick.

Christine’s fortune is just one of the things a Domestic Service Professional can achieve through hardwork and determination to be successful.  A long list of achievements would also include a better life for the family, house & lot, Academic diploma / degree for the children and siblings, retirement funds, business opportunities and a whole lot more which our naked eyes can see.  But more than that, the biggest achievement of a Domestic Service Professional can only be seen deep within the heart and soul of every practitioner.

Truly, Domestic Service Professionals are world-class Filipinos! Filipinos that promote not just our nation, but more of our Pride and Glory!

Let’s all promote the advocacy for the Domestic Service Professionals and pave the way for every Filipino to make it Global.  Let’s start within our homes by calling all our household helpers or maids as Domestic Service Professionals. Together, we can create a Global recognition that can open up even greater opportunities for them which we, as Filipinos, can be proud of.
